We would like to welcome Professor Burke Hales from Oregon State University College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences to the Carbon Balance and Management editorial board. Professor Hales will be taking on the role of co-Editor-in-Chief, alongside Georgii Alexandrov (Russian Academy of Science), and as such will now share responsibility for editorial decisions, as well as ongoing development projects.

As a chemical oceanographer, Professor Hales’ research focuses on ocean carbon cycling, from the perspective of observational biogeochemistry, at the primary boundaries of the oceans: atmospheric, sea-floor, and continental.  In joining the editorial board for Carbon Balance and Management, Professor Hales will be encouraging manuscripts from aquatic carbon researchers to be submitted to the journal.

Carbon Balance and Management is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal that encompasses all aspects of research aimed at developing a comprehensive policy relevant to the understanding of the global carbon cycle. Recent transformations of the carbon cycle and changes in climate and atmospheric composition have brought this important issue to the forefront of the minds of many researchers, scientists and general public.

With the new US Carbon Cycle Science Plan announced last year emphasizing the need for global scale research initiatives tackling greenhouse gases, carbon pools and fluxes in the global carbon cycle, it is set to be an exciting time for carbon research. With this in mind, Carbon Balance and Management is perfectly placed to provide a forum for discussion at the interface between carbon research and policy.  Monitoring and understanding the global carbon cycle and the potentially dangerous implications of these changes is important both for the biosphere and for the well-being of humankind. The underlying goal of the journal is to facilitate interdisciplinary discussion around these important global issues.
