The authors of ‘Entry into primary care-based buprenorphine treatment is associated with identification and treatment of other chronic medical problems,’, Theresa A Rowe (Yale University), Janet S Jacapraro (University of Maryland) and Darius A Rastegar (Johns Hopkins University) conclude that that initiation of office-based buprenorphine treatment in a primary care setting is associated with identification and treatment of other chronic medical problems, suggesting a benefit beyond drug treatment outcomes.
Previous studies on this topic have shown that providing on-site medical care with drug treatment is associated with improved follow-up with care, improved drug outcomes , and a reduction in emergency department use and hospitalization. However, there have been few studies of the medical care of patients engaged in office-based buprenorphine treatment. This study aims to evaluate the identification and treatment of other chronic medical conditions among patients who initiated office-based buprenorphine treatment in an academic primary care practice.
