What can dengue and Japanese encephalitis teach us about Zika?

As the threat posed by Zika cast a shadow on this year’s  Olympics  and reports that the virus has emerged in North America, researchers are seeking to better understand all the possible means of viral transmission. In this interview, Dr. Lin H. Chen and Dr. Mary E. Wilson (Harvard University, USA), authors of the Commentary “Update on non-vector transmission of dengue: relevant studies with Zika and other flaviviruses” published in Tropical Diseases, Travel Medicine and Vaccines, discuss reports of flaviviruses that have documented non-vector transmission and may prove relevant in the transmission of Zika.
