Prospective trial registration aims to detect and prevent selective reporting and publication bias. A study published today in Trials assessed trial registration among a large sample of clinical trials published in ten high-impact specialty society medical journals and here, the authors discuss implications for the field and how we might address issues with retrospectively registered clinical trials going forward.

Dara O’Neill, Steven Bell & Annie Britton discuss their new study, published in BMC Medicine, which finds that inconsistently moderate drinkers, former drinkers and non-drinkers each have greater risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) compared to consistently moderate drinkers.
