A team based in Burkino Faso show that Chromobacterium anophelis sp. nov. IRSSSOUMB001 – a bacterial strain native to the country – is highly virulent against the larval form of Anopheles coluzzi mosquitoes, as well as reducing the reproductive capability and offspring fitness of the mosquito species. This shows promising early results for another way to control the spread of malaria through its vector, coming at a time when resistance to chemical and biological insectides is becoming ever more prevalent.
