Open Access Week (24th – 30th October) is a global event to increase awareness of the benefits of open access publishing, and to give the research community the opportunity to discuss and share their views on the topic. Since 2012 there has been an official theme, and previous years have included: redefining impact, generation of open research, and open for collaboration.
This year’s theme is ‘Open in Action’, with the emphasis now shifting from discussion to action. The aim is to encourage taking solid steps towards making research more openly available.
You probably know that BioMed Central was the first commercial open access publisher. To start the week’s activities, the image below demonstrates the huge variety of open access research published by our parent company, Springer Nature.
Over the course of this week we’ll be publishing a range of blogs discussing open access and looking at what action is being taken to promote and encourage it. These blogs will include a look at open access policies across Europe and how they are changing, a Q&A with patient authors from Research Involvement and Engagement: an open peer review journal, and a look at the FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot in Europe that is facilitating the publication of research projects funded under the European Union’s 7th Framework Program.
We’ll also be testing how much you already know about open access by bringing you a quiz to test your knowledge.
