The 2011 edition of Thomson Reuters’ Journal Citation Reports, released on June 28th 2012, demonstrates the high impact of BioMed Central’s journals with quality publications and the global visibility of research enabled by open access publishing resulting in impressive rates of citation.

Altogether, 122 BioMed Central journals now have official Impact Factors, including 19 journals receiving their first Impact Factor this year.
Highlights include:

• Genome Biology (IF 9.04) saw a huge jump in its Impact Factor and is now in the top 10 of both the Genetics & Heredity, and the Biotechnology & Applied Microbiology categories.
• BMC Medicine (IF 6.04) is now in the top 10% of journals in the General Medicine category.
• BMC Biology (IF 5.75) moves to 6th in the Biology category.
• Genetic Selection & Evolution (IF 2.89) is now the number 1 journal in the Agriculture, Dairy & Animal Science category.
• Veterinary Research (4.06) increases its Impact Factor and remains in the number 1 slot for the Veterinary Sciences category
• Frontiers in Zoology (4.46) moves to 3rd out of 146 journals in the Zoology category.
• Particle and Fibre Toxicology (IF 7.25) saw an impressive increase in its Impact Factor and ranks 2nd of 83 in the Toxicology category.
• Retrovirology (IF 6.47) increases its Impact Factor by over 1 and is ranked 4th in the Virology category.
• BMC Medical Ethics (1.74) enters at number 2 in the Medical Ethics category with its first Impact Factor.
• Cell Communication and Signaling (IF 5.50) and Journal of Cheminformatics (IF 3.42) also both made a strong start with their first Impact Factors.
