A new study into the growth of open access publishing has highlighted a ten-fold increase over the last decade. The average annual growth rate in the number of open access articles published is now over 30%, demonstrating the increasing appetite in the scientific community for peer-reviewed research to be freely available online.
The number of open access journals has also increased, on average, 18% year-on-year over the same period. In comparison, there is a reported 3.5% yearly increase in the total number of peer reviewed journals with 7.7 % of all peer reviewed journal articles coming from open access journals in 2009.
The study was conducted by a team of researchers from the HANKEN School of
Economics and published in the journal PLoS One.
