We are delighted to announce the upcoming launch of BMC Digital Health, a new member of the BMC Series journal family.
Launching in Spring 2022, the journal will provide an inclusive, open access venue for research in all aspects of digital technologies in medicine and public health, building on BMC’s strength in healthcare research and its reputation for innovation. In line with BMC’s ethos as the pioneer of sustainable open access, the journal will champion open science, supported by transparent peer review and open data policies.
Digital Health is an exciting new area which, to a large degree, is transforming medical and health practices; it refers to the use of technologies to facilitate medical research and deliver healthcare, as well as helping to develop the concept of personalized medicine. It is a is a multifaceted discipline with multiple stakeholders, including clinicians and researchers with expertise in diverse areas, such as healthcare, public health, data technologies, health informatics and biomedical engineering.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also undoubtedly thrust digital health into the limelight; the delivery of healthcare via telehealth-based services has increased rapidly as a way of delivering care services while minimizing the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

BMC Digital Health, in alignment with the WHOs’ Global Strategy on Digital Health will drive forward evidence-based innovation in healthcare and medicine by bringing together researchers from diverse disciplines and industries. More broadly, the journal will reinforce BMC and Springer Nature’s strong commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and is committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity; efforts are now underway to recruit an International Editorial Board with broad and diverse expertise in digital health to help us achieve these goals.
The journal will consider manuscripts on mobile health applications, virtual healthcare and wearable technology, as well as the role of social media and other communications technology in digital health. As with other BMC Series journals, BMC Digital Health does not make editorial decisions on the basis of the interest of a study or its likely impact. Studies must be scientifically valid; for research articles this includes a scientifically sound research question, the use of suitable methods and analysis, and following community-agreed standards relevant to the research field.
