Liverpool MP Louise Ellman joined BioMed Central
staff and editors at the opening of BioMed Central’s
second UK office, at Liverpool Science Park, on Thursday,
22 May.
At the ceremony, guests from Liverpool City
Council, neighbouring universities and institutions gathered to celebrate the
opening of the new office.
BioMed Central has published more
than 35,000 open access peer-reviewed research
articles and in 2007 delivered more than 34 million downloads of those
articles. With the company expecting to publish
up to 15,000 articles in 2008, rapid expansion was called
for, leading to the acquisition of the new 1400 ft2 Liverpool
premises. The new office will handle aspects of editorial administration
and production for BioMed Central’s 180+ scientific journals.
Speaking at the opening, Matthew Cockerill,
said: "BioMed Central’s rapid growth meant that we needed
to look beyond London to expand. After considering several locations
around the country, we chose Liverpool because of its international reputation
as a research centre, and the excellent facilities offered
by Liverpool Science Park."
