Data analyzed and reported by gender in medical research needs to become standard practice: a commentary in JIAS
Women continue to be underrepresented
in clinical trials, and even in studies in which both men and women
participate, systematic analysis of data to identify potential sex-based
differences is lacking. To raise awareness of this issue 20 leading experts and
editors have written a commentary on Gender-sensitive
reporting in medical research for International Women’s Day. The commentary
is published today 8 March 2012 in the Journal of the International AIDS Society
to call for the inclusion of a gender perspective in author guidelines and
editorial policies.
Although guidelines exist on
accurate and adequate reporting of randomized clinical trials such as the Consolidated
Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT), they do not address the issue of
