BMC Public Health is proud to announce the introduction of a new editorial structure to support the extraordinary growth it has displayed since its launch over a decade ago. As with most other journals in the BMC series, the Executive Editor has been supported by subject-specialist academic Section Editors.

This valued support will continue along with newly appointed Editors-in-Chief who we are excited to welcome to the journal. Each Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for a broad subject division within the journal, comprising one or more subject sections.

Supported by the Executive Editor and the Section Editors, the Editor-in-Chief has overall editorial responsibility for their division, ensuring that our ethos of being open, inclusive and trusted is maintained.

The new Editors-in-Chief

The Editor-in-Chief of the Global Health division is Omar Khan, a board-certified family physician with active interests in global health and medical education. Dr Khan has authored over 65 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has additionally authored or co-authored 4 books in the area of global health, including ‘Readings in Global Health’ and ‘The End of Polio?’ and ‘Megacities & Global Health’.

The division will publish studies looking at the health of populations in a global context which transcends the perspectives and concerns of individual nations.

Dr Corneel Vandelanotte’s Energy balance-related behaviors division encourages submissions on health behaviors which may positively or negatively influence the energy balance (physical activity, sedentary behavior, diet/nutrition) and which may be related to weight-status, -gain and -control.

Dr Vandelanotte is an Associate Professor and leads the Physical Activity Research Group at the Central Queensland University in Australia.His research has a population-based approach to health behavior change and is focused on the development and evaluation of web- and app-based physical activity interventions.

As Editor-in-Chief of this division, he has recruited, and we would like to welcome, Section Editors Dr Richard Rosenkranz, Dr Dianne Stanton Ward, Dr Amanda Daley and Deputy Section Editors Dr Carol Maher and Dr Marc Adams.

Professor Martin Caraher, Editor-in-Chief of the Health policies, systems and management division, will be welcoming submissions on studies looking at the impact of health policies, practices and interventions on communities in high, low and middle-income countries.

Professor Caraher is professor of food and health policy at Centre for Food Policy, City University, London and has worked for and acted as a consultant to the UK Department of Health, the World Bank and the World Health Organisation.

Professor Caraher has recruited, and we would like to welcome, Section Editors Dr Rachel Carey, Dr Ariadne Kapetanaki, Dr Christopher Barton and Deputy Section Editor Dr Barbara Seed.

Margaret Barry, Editor-in-Chief of the Health behavior, health promotion and society division, is Professor of Health Promotion and Public Health and Head of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion Research at the National University of Ireland Galway.

Professor Barry has published widely in health promotion and works closely with policymakers and practitioners on the development, implementation and evaluation of mental health promotion interventions and policies at national and international level.

Professor Barry will be welcoming submissions on studies looking at the processes enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants and the actions taken by them to maintain, attain, or regain good health and prevent illness.

The section also encourages studies looking at the social determinants of health. Dr Carl Latkin and Professor Victor Minichiello, who have contributed much valued work and support to the journal over the last few years, are the current Section Editors of the Health behavior, health promotion and society section.

Currently recruiting

We are currently recruiting Editors-in-Chief for the remaining two divisions of the journal: Disease epidemiology and statistical methods which will publish studies on the epidemiology of chronic and infectious diseases as well as those looking at statistical models and methods and their application to problems of human health and disease; and Occupational and environmental health which will welcome studies on the environmental and occupational correlates of health and disease.
