Acta Neuropathologica Communications (ANC), a new open access journal focusing on the pathology and mechanisms of neurological disease has launched today with BioMed Central. Led by Editor-in-Chief Werner Paulus, a Professor of Neuropathology at University Hospital Münster, the journal hopes to emulate the success of its older, sister journal, Acta Neuropathalogica published by Springer.

Like Acta Neuropathalogica, ANC will publish high quality research and aims to get a decision on manuscripts to authors within 11 days, however it differs in the fact that it will only publish manuscripts which require no or only minor revisions. Mapping the risks of H7N9 infection in China

Avian influenza A (H7N9) is a tricky version of bird flu which seems to be sweeping across China. At the end of April the WHO registered 126 cases and 24 deaths but as of the beginning of May according to the Chinese CDC, there have been 127 confirmed cases of H7N9 in mainland China with 26 deaths.

A lack of information about the virus and its mode of transmission has led to public concerns that H7N9 could be a pandemic waiting to happen. It is a difficult virus to track because its main hosts – birds – do not appear to show symptoms of infection.

OA in the UK

From 1 April 2013, all academics funded by Research Councils UK (RCUK) need to be compliant with a new open access policy. The policy requires grantees to make their research available via open access – either immediately via open access (OA) publishing, or via OA deposit of the author version in an archive –typically with an embargo period.

Immediate OA via OA publishing is the route strongly preferred by the research councils, and to reduce barriers to OA publishing, dedicated funds have been made available to all universities which receive RCUK funding to cover article processing charges.

Rare diseases day February 28th 2013 aims to raise awareness of rare diseases and their impact on people’s lives. These diseases have a cost, not just to the people affected and their families, but also in medical care, lost earnings, and to pay for research into improving diagnosis and treatment.

Diseases are classified as ‘rare’ if they affect less than one in 2000 people. But in reality ‘rare diseases’ are not that rare. In the UK alone one in 17 people will be affected at some point in their lives, which equates to more than 3.5 million people. Most of these will be children, and 30% of individuals with a rare disease will die before they are five years old.

Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases has completed its transfer to BioMed Central. In doing so, JVATiTD becomes the 250th journal in the BioMed Central portfolio.

JVATiTD is the official journal of the Center for the Study of Venoms and Venomous Animals (CEVAP), a unit of São Paulo State University (UNESP). The journal is dedicated to research on all aspects of toxins, venomous animals and their derivative products, also welcoming submissions related to tropical diseases with a focus on infectious diseases, parasitology and immunology.
