BMC Mechanical Engineering is now open for submissions!

We are excited to announce that our latest engineering journal, BMC Mechanical Engineering, is now open for submissions! This journal further expands the scope of the BMC series beyond biology and medicine and into engineering. Editor Alex Houssein talks more about this exciting new launch.

BMC Mechanical Engineering officially opened for submissions in September 2018 and is the fourth journal in the BMC series family of journals that serves communities beyond biology and medicine. The ethos of BMC Mechanical Engineering is to be open and inclusive, submissions are rigorously peer reviewed to assess scientific validity and published articles become freely available immediately to all readers, irrespective of their affiliation or location.

2018 has been named the “Year of Engineering” by the UK government, an initiative that has seen wide support by hundreds of national and international organisations. Mechanical engineers are at the forefront of technological innovation and influence the world’s most pressing matters, including economic growth, environmental policy, health, sustainability and many more.

Since the advent of human civilisation, people have been inventing mechanical machines and processes that have paved the way for future technological innovations. The industrial revolution facilitated inventions such as the steam engine, the internal combustion engine, as well as railways, aircrafts and commercial vehicles that revolutionised our society and many of them are still widely used. Currently, the field is central to emerging and often disruptive technologies that aim to re-think how we commute, design and manufacture products, consume energy, interact with the environment, or deliver healthcare.

Today, mechanical engineering is an inherently multidisciplinary field that combines principles from physics, mathematics, informatics, thermodynamics and materials, just to name a few. It aims to develop and construct mechanical systems that will find applications in a wide range of industries.

BMC Mechanical Engineering embraces this diversity of subjects and comes to support a large and international research community. With a focus on championing Open Access research, it aims to advance scientific discovery by making research freely accessible across the world.

It envisions contributing towards Springer Nature’s Grand Challenge Programme with a focus on global health and sustainability, by facilitating research in mechatronics, robotics, fuel consumption, automotive engineering, transportation and more!

To cover such a wide array of scientific principles and applications, the scope of BMC Mechanical Engineering is broad and is divided into eight sections, led by eight esteemed Section Editors:

The board is supported by an international Editorial Advisory Board of senior scientists and researchers that is chaired by Professor Walter Herzog, a highly respected thought leader in biomechanics from the University of Calgary, Canada.

We would like to invite you to submit your research to the journal and be part of this unique community. The journal will launch its first articles in April 2019, so submit now and be one of our founding authors!

If you would like to know more about the journal or have any pre-submission queries, feel free to email me at alexandros.houssein@biomedcentral.com. The journal will be present at IMECE 2018 (9-15 November, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and at MRS Fall (25-30 Nov, Boston, Massachusetts). If you are attending, feel free to reach out – I’d be delighted to meet you.
