Open access publishing: ten-fold increase in ten years


A new study into the growth of open access publishing has highlighted a
ten-fold increase over the last decade. The average annual growth rate in the
number of open access articles published is now over 30%, demonstrating the increasing appetite in the
scientific community for peer-reviewed research to be freely available online.

Open access publishingThe number of open access journals has also increased, on
average, 18% year-on-year over the same period. In comparison, there is a
reported 3.5% yearly
increase in the total number of peer reviewed journals with 7.7 % of all peer
reviewed journal articles coming from open access journals in 2009.
